Our Distillery

You can find Tamnavulin in the heart of the world’s most famous whisky-making region – Speyside. Our purpose-built distillery is looked after by a passionate and dedicated team of expert whisky makers, balancing tradition and modernity to create a signature Speyside single malt whisky.

The distillery sits on the site of a carding mill that dates back to the 16th century. The mill is still standing today, and its iconic wooden water wheel can be seen on every bottle of our sweet, smooth and fruity single malt whisky.

How we make our whisky

At Tamnavulin we take centuries of tradition and whisky-making knowledge and combine it with modern know-how to create a signature Speyside single malt whisky.

Milling

The whisky making process starts with milling, where we take the finest quality malted barley and pass it through our mill. Here, giant rollers crush the barley into a substance known as ‘grist’.

Mashing

We take our grist and combine it with natural spring water that comes straight off the surrounding mountains. This is placed in a large vessel called a ‘mash tun’ where it’s gently heated and mixed to create a sugary liquid known as ‘wort’.

Fermentation

The wort is transferred into a fermentation device called a ‘washback’, where yeast is added. The liquid is left for a number of days, allowing the yeast to convert the sugar in the wort into an alcoholic liquid called ‘wash’.

Distillation

The liquid is boiled in our unique copper stills, causing it to evaporate. These vapours rise up and along the still’s ‘arm’ converting back into liquid. This is repeated, and the liquid is then sent to a spirit safe, where it’s split into 3 parts, known as ‘the head’, ‘the heart’ and ‘the tail’. The heart is taken for maturation and the other two sent to be distilled again.

Maturation

Our new make spirit is initially matured in American White Oak ex-Bourbon casks and then, when the time is right, the whisky is finished in a second, different cask that perfectly complements and enhances the flavours. We call it: Single Malt, double Flavour.
